The Names We’ve Been Waiting For! Hunger Games Prequel Finally Reveals Who Katniss’s Parents Really Are

Hold onto your Mockingjay pins, Hunger Games fans—the mystery of a lifetime has finally been solved.

Since we first met Katniss Everdeen in , her parents have largely been figures of mystery, known only as “Mr. and Mrs. Everdeen.” But with the release of the newest prequel book, Sunrise on the Reaping, author Suzanne Collins is finally pulling back the curtain on the Everdeen family tree, and the names are absolutely perfect.

The new story takes us back years before the original trilogy, focusing on the th Hunger Games—the year a young Haymitch Abernathy (played by Woody Harrelson in the films) fought for his life in the Second Quarter Quell.

Through Haymitch’s eyes, we are introduced to his best friend in District : Burdock Everdeen.

Fans on X (formerly Twitter) and TikTok are already losing it over the name. “Burdock! It’s so rugged and perfect for a man who lived in the woods,” one fan cheered. According to the book, Burdock was a powerful hunter who was rarely seen without his bow—a “striking resemblance” to the daughter he would eventually have.

But the reveals didn’t stop there. The book also introduces us to the girl Burdock “fancies,” a healer named Asterid March who works in an apothecary. For those who remember Paula Malcomson’s portrayal of Katniss’s mother in the films, the pieces click together instantly.

Not only does Asterid’s background explain how Prim (Willow Shields) became such a gifted healer, but the book confirms that after Haymitch returned from the Games, Burdock and Asterid officially became a couple. Later, they are seen with a baby girl—our future Girl on Fire.

While the names themselves are a treat for fans, the deeper meaning behind them is what’s truly viral. It turns out Haymitch’s connection to the Everdeens was much more than just being a mentor to Katniss.

In Sunrise on the Reaping, we learn that Burdock was actually the cousin of Lenore Dove, Haymitch’s girlfriend at the time. This means that when Haymitch first met Katniss in the original Hunger Games, he wasn’t just looking at a random tribute; he was looking at the daughter of his best friend and a relative of the woman he loved.

This new context changes everything about Haymitch’s “grumpy” behavior. We now know that President Snow had Haymitch’s mother, brother, and girlfriend killed to punish him. He pushed everyone away—including Burdock and Asterid—to protect them.

“I’m actually sobbing,” one fan wrote on TikTok. “Haymitch spent years watching his best friend’s daughter from a distance, and then he had to mentor her knowing she would likely die. No wonder he drank!”

The reveal also highlights a beautiful full-circle moment for the franchise. In the prequel, a young Haymitch makes a solemn vow to Lenore Dove that he will “never let the sun rise on a reaping day ever again.” While he wasn’t able to spark the rebellion in his youth, he eventually helps Katniss finish exactly what he started.

As Plutarch Heavensbee (the late Philip Seymour Hoffman) tells Haymitch at the end of the prequel, the world just needed someone “luckier and with better timing” to win the war.

It turns out that person was the daughter of his best friend. And honestly? We’ll never look at their hug in Mockingjay the same way again.
