Jennifer Lawrence has always been known for her unfiltered personality and willingness to laugh at herself, but one of her stories from The Hunger Games: Catching Fire may be among her most relatable. During a candid conversation with Leonardo DiCaprio for Variety’s Actors on Actors, Lawrence revealed that an accidental medication mix-up once turned an important day on set into a surreal experience.
The incident happened when Lawrence mistakenly took an Ambien in the morning, believing she was taking a different medication. Unfortunately, she was scheduled to film a dance scene with Philip Seymour Hoffman, who played Plutarch Heavensbee in the Hunger Games franchise.
Lawrence later admitted that she was essentially hallucinating while trying to perform. What sounds hilarious in retrospect was considerably less amusing for the people working alongside her at the time. Elizabeth Banks, who portrayed the highly organized Effie Trinket, reportedly became frustrated with Lawrence’s unusual behavior.
Lawrence recalled that Banks was particularly annoyed with her, adding that Banks may not have realized that the actress was under the effects of Ambien. The situation created an amusing contrast between their real-life interaction and the relationship between their characters, Katniss Everdeen and Effie Trinket.
The story came up while Lawrence and DiCaprio were discussing the difficulties of getting enough sleep during demanding film productions. Lawrence explained that she pays close attention to how much sleep she gets, but her attempts to manage her energy have occasionally produced the opposite result.
She remembered another medication-related mishap while filming the spy thriller Red Sparrow. On that occasion, Lawrence accidentally took Adderall instead of the medication she had intended to use for sleep. Instead of becoming tired, she was left wide awake and increasingly anxious throughout the night.
“I was taking hot showers in a panic,” Lawrence recalled, describing how she tried to calm herself down. The next day was particularly challenging because she had to deliver complicated dialogue while performing a difficult Russian accent.
One line proved especially memorable. Lawrence joked about having to say “Senate Armed Services Committee” in a Russian accent, describing the experience as particularly unpleasant after spending the previous night unable to sleep.
Fans have embraced the stories because they fit perfectly with Lawrence’s reputation for turning embarrassing situations into comedy. Social media users have also joked about the similarity between Banks’ real-life frustration and Effie’s exasperation with Katniss in the Hunger Games movies.
One popular reaction summed up the situation by suggesting that Elizabeth Banks being annoyed while Lawrence was hallucinating sounded exactly like Effie and Katniss behaving the same way off camera.
Lawrence has also admitted that she does not regularly watch her own movies, even joking with DiCaprio about whether he watches Titanic. But her revelations have given fans a new reason to revisit Catching Fire and imagine what was happening behind the scenes during those scenes.
The story may have started as a production mishap, but Lawrence’s ability to tell it with humor has transformed it into another unforgettable Hollywood anecdote.
