The odds are officially back in our favor, Hunger Games fans!
Just when we thought the “Girl on Fire” had hung up her bow for good, Suzanne Collins has dropped a bombshell that is currently blowing up TikTok and X. The latest novel in the dystopian saga, Sunrise on the Reaping, isn’t just a trip down memory lane—it’s the perfect open door for Jennifer Lawrence to return to the big screen as Katniss Everdeen.
While the prequel is primarily set years before the original trilogy, focusing on a young Haymitch Abernathy (famously played by Woody Harrelson) during the th Hunger Games, it’s the ending that has social media in a frenzy.
Warning: Major spoilers ahead!
The book concludes on a surprisingly optimistic note, finally giving Haymitch the closure fans have craved for over a decade. But the real “mic drop” moment happens in the epilogue, which jumps several years into the future—straight into the post-rebellion era we haven’t seen since the final moments of Mockingjay – Part .
The scene features a present-day Katniss and Peeta, proving that the upcoming film adaptation has the perfect, canon-compliant way to bring J.Law back into the fold.
“I actually gasped reading the last few pages,” one fan shared in a viral TikTok. “If they don’t get Jennifer Lawrence for this cameo, I’m going to have a breakdown. It’s the only way to finish Haymitch’s story!”
Initially, fans were skeptical about Lawrence returning for a prequel, given the timeline. However, this “present-day” flash-forward serves a deeply emotional purpose. Throughout the book, Haymitch’s journey is defined by trauma and a spark of rebellion that he eventually passes down to Katniss.
In one pivotal chapter, the mastermind Plutarch Heavensbee tells Haymitch that they eventually need “someone just like him” to finally topple the Capitol. This direct parallel makes a Katniss appearance more than just fan service—it makes it a necessity for the film’s message of legacy and sacrifice.
Unlike the bleak ending of The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, which tracked the chilling rise of President Snow, Sunrise on the Reaping offers a much more uplifting conclusion. Seeing an older, peaceful Katniss would serve as a powerful reminder that Haymitch’s decades of suffering were worth it because he helped guide the girl who finally broke the system.
The epilogue also highlights Haymitch’s growth, showing how he has come to view the District victors as his “family.” Without Lawrence reprising her role, critics and fans alike argue the emotional weight of Haymitch’s victory would be lost.
While Lionsgate has yet to confirm any casting for the film adaptation, the internet has made its verdict clear: it’s time to bring Katniss home.
Will Jennifer Lawrence pick up the bow for one last emotional scene? Only time will tell, but the world is definitely watching.
