Jennifer Lawrence Calls Out Male Directors Amid Die My Love Press Tour

Jennifer Lawrence has never been known for carefully filtering her opinions about Hollywood, and her latest interview is once again giving fans plenty to discuss. While promoting her intense new drama Die My Love, the Oscar-winning actress opened up about the different directing styles she has experienced throughout her career, particularly her frustration with filmmakers who feel the need to constantly demonstrate their authority.

Speaking with Vulture, Lawrence explained that she has worked with male directors who seemed determined to prove that they were in control of every aspect of a production. In her view, that kind of constant micromanagement does not necessarily improve a film and can instead become distracting and frustrating for the actors.

Lawrence described situations where directors appeared more focused on visibly directing than actually helping the production move forward. Her comments quickly attracted attention online, with fans praising her for being willing to discuss the less glamorous realities of working on major movie sets.

She also offered her own humorous interpretation of the word “auteur,” a term often associated with filmmakers who have a distinctive creative vision. Rather than immediately connecting the word with artistic genius, Lawrence joked that she associates it with being controlling and neurotic.

Her experience working with Lynne Ramsay on Die My Love, however, appears to have given her a completely different perspective on what directing can be. Lawrence described Ramsay’s approach as far less controlling and much more focused on creating an environment where actors could discover moments organically.

Instead of constantly monitoring every movement or demanding precise performances, Ramsay would establish the atmosphere and then step back. Lawrence said that this freedom sometimes produced unexpected moments that might have disappeared under a more rigid directing style, including genuine laughter and spontaneous reactions.

According to Lawrence, Ramsay would gradually move away from the actors before returning with a simple response that the scene was working and asking them to do it again. For Lawrence, that approach created a more natural creative process and allowed her to become fully immersed in the character.

The actress also spoke about the experience of filming such an emotionally demanding project while pregnant. She credited Robert Pattinson, her co-star in Die My Love, with helping create a comfortable and professional working environment.

Lawrence said she felt safe working with Pattinson and emphasized his respectful attitude. Rather than making their intimate scenes uncomfortable, the two reportedly developed a relaxed friendship and often talked about their children and relationships when they were not filming.

The collaboration between Lawrence, Pattinson, and Ramsay has generated significant interest around Die My Love. The film received a substantial theatrical release and strong financial backing from Mubi, reflecting the distributor’s confidence in the project.

For Lawrence, the movie appears to represent more than another challenging acting role. It demonstrates the creative possibilities that emerge when a director establishes a strong environment and then trusts experienced performers enough to explore it themselves. After years of working with different filmmaking personalities, Lawrence seems to have found a directing style that gives her exactly what she values most: freedom to create.
