Dutton Ranch: 6 Biggest Unanswered Questions For Season 2

Warning: SPOILERS For Dutton Ranch Season 1's Finale – "El Padrino"Dutton Ranch season 1's action-packed finale closed out with a nail-biting cliffhanger among many other burning questions. Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) defended their ranch from an invasion by Mexican drug kingpin Mariano Reyes (Raoul Max Trujillo), but their conflict has only just begun.

At the end of Dutton Ranch season 1, Carter (Finn Little) was abducted by Mariano's men in retaliation for Beth and Rip seizing $2 million in smuggled fentanyl and for killing Reyes' soldiers. Meanwhile, Rob-Will Jackson (Jai Courtney) was murdered by a mysterious assailant, although the likely suspect is his adopted brother, Joaquin Reyes (Juan Pablo Raba).

Beulah Jackson's (Annette Bening) secret that the 10-Petals Ranch has been smuggling Mariano's drugs for the past fifteen years has now been revealed, putting her future, along with employees Beth and Rip, in jeopardy.

A lot has to be settled when Dutton Ranch returns for season 2, and here are the 6 biggest questions looming over Rio Paloma.

Will Beth & Rip Rescue Carter?

Dutton Ranch: 6 Biggest Unanswered Questions For Season 2

Carter was kidnapped from his private sanctuary, the former ranch of the late Dwight White (Ray McKinnon). Mariano wasted no time calling Beth to let her know that he has her adopted son. With that, Beth and Rip declared war, moving from defense and offense to get Carter back.

How Mariano found Carter when Beth couldn't in Dutton Ranch season 1's finale is another open question, but the prevalent issue is how Beth and Rip can get Carter back. Precedence is on Carter's side, however; Tate Dutton (Brecken Merrill) was kidnapped and rescued in Yellowstone season 2.

There is, of course, the possibility that Beth and Rip will fail and Carter will die in Dutton Ranch season 2. That would completely upend not just Beth and Rip's lives, but Oreana Jackson's (Natalie Alyn Lind) as well.

Who Shot Rob-Will?

Dutton Ranch: 6 Biggest Unanswered Questions For Season 2

Rob-Will was shot in the head and died in Dutton Ranch season 1's finale, but this may turn into a murder mystery. Although Mariano ordered his son, Joaquin, to kill his adoptive brother, Juan Pablo Raba posits that Kino is innocent and someone else pulled the trigger.

Although a distraught Joaquin was later shown with a gun in his car, he may have merely witnessed Rob-Will's murder. Oreana only heard the gunshot and saw a black SUV speeding from the scene. Not long after, Beulah arrived to find her granddaughter kneeling over her son's body.

Joaquin remains the most likely suspect, but possible options for Rob-Will's killer include Mariano's henchman Miguel (Berto Colon) and Austin (Sterlin English), the whistleblowing 10-Petals ranch hand who has revenge as a motive because Rob-Will killed his friend, Wes Ayers (Nakoa DeCoite). Sheriff Handy Wade (Josh Stewart) also isn't above killing in cold blood.

How Can Beth & Rip Keep Working For Beulah?

Dutton Ranch: 6 Biggest Unanswered Questions For Season 2

After learning that Beulah Jackson has headed up a drug smuggling operation for fifteen years — and brought an unwitting Beth and Rip in as accessories — how can the Dutton-Wheelers continue to work for the "Grizzly in Gucci?" It's understandable if Beth and Rip want to sever ties with Beulah in Dutton Ranch season 2.

However, it's not that easy for Beth and Rip since their financial futures are tied to the 10-Petals Ranch. Beth and Rip lost their black angus herd to foot-and-mouth disease (thanks to Mariano's illegal cattle smuggling). They came to Beulah because they had no other real options to earn a living in Rio Paloma.

Beth and Rip may have to find a way to continue working for Beulah in Dutton Ranch season 2, despite their reservations and lack of trust in Mama B.

Interestingly, Kelly Reilly wants Beth's partnership with Beulah to continue, saying that she "would love Beth and Rip to collaborate with Beulah. It has to be on a new, level field now after what’s happened, but I don’t think Beulah is the true enemy of them."

Will Oreana Keep Her Baby?

Dutton Ranch: 6 Biggest Unanswered Questions For Season 2

Warning: This Section Deals With Sexual Assault

Oreana Jackson has a secret: she's pregnant. Presumably, Carter is the father, unless she had other offscreen hookups in the few weeks that elapsed in Dutton Ranch season 1. However, Oreana didn't tell Carter about her condition. Instead, she proposed running away with him.

Whether she knows it or not, Oreana is partially repeating how Beulah got pregnant with her father, Rob-Will, in 1981. Teenage Beulah (Rebeca Robles) "got herself raped" (as Beulah's father would say), and she killed Rob-Will's father, Luke (Cameron Cowperthwaite), as seen in Dutton Ranch episode 7's flashbacks.

Oreana's pregnancy also echoes what Beth Dutton went through when she got pregnant as a teenager in Yellowstone, only for her brother, Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley), to have her sterilized. Hopefully, what happens next to Oreana regarding her pregnancy in Dutton Ranch season 2 won't be as grim and tragic as Beth and Beulah's.

Will Beulah’s Father Appear In Dutton Ranch Season 2 Flashbacks?

Dutton Ranch: 6 Biggest Unanswered Questions For Season 2

Mariano Reyes loomed over Dutton Ranch season 1 as a mystery villain, but there's another specter from the past that still impacts the 10-Petals Ranch today: Beulah Jackson's father. The late Jackson patriarch has not been seen thus far except for a framed photo in Beulah's office.

Beulah's father has been spoken of often, and not in glowing terms. Beulah hated him, and so did Mariano when he was the top ranch hand at the 10-Petals, although Rob-Will admired his grandfather. Given Dutton Ranch's revelatory flashbacks to Beulah's past, perhaps season 2 will introduce the mysterious and fearsome Mr. Jackson.

Will Dutton Ranch Season 2 Crossover With Marshals?

Dutton Ranch: 6 Biggest Unanswered Questions For Season 2

Dutton Ranch premiered as the biggest original series launch in Paramount+ history. Not to be outdone, Kayce Dutton's (Luke Grimes) spinoff, Marshals, became one of network television's highest rated shows on CBS. Both Dutton offshoots are breathing new life into Taylor Sheridan's mighty Yellowstone franchise.

With Kayce fighting crime in Montana, and Beth and Rip blazing a new future in Texas, Yellowstone fans obviously want to see them share the screen again. Marshals is currently filming season 2 for a fall 2026 premiere, while Paramount+ recently gave Dutton Ranch a second season under new showrunner Benjamin Cavell.

Marshals and Dutton Ranch's season 2 production schedules may not align, which could make a crossover difficult (but not impossible). It's hard to imagine, however, that Beth and Rip would pop up in Montana when their crises in Rio Paloma remain unresolved.

It remains to be seen if Marshals and Dutton Ranch can coordinate for Beth, Rip, and Kayce to ride together again.
