Why Emma Watson Nearly Quit ‘Harry Potter’ at the Height of Her Fame

The wizarding world nearly lost its brightest witch, and fans are just now finding out how close we came to a Hogwarts without Hermione Granger.

As Potterheads dive into the highly anticipated HBO Max special, Harry Potter th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts, one revelation is sending massive shockwaves through social media: Emma Watson seriously considered walking away from the role that made her a household name.

The reunion, which brings the iconic cast back to the original sets for the first time in years, features a raw and emotional look at the heavy price of child stardom.

During a candid sit-down with her former co-stars, Watson admitted she reached a “tipping point” where the pressure of global fame became truly overwhelming.

Director David Yates, who helmed the final four films, recalled that Watson was considering bowing out around the time he signed on for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

“I think I was scared,” Watson tells her co-stars in the special. “I don’t know if you ever felt like it got to a tipping point where you were like, ‘This is kind of forever now.’”

The actress, who was just years old when she was cast, explained that the reality of her celebrity status began to feel deeply isolating as she entered her teens.

“It was around the time of Order of the Phoenix when things started getting spicy for all of us,” she said. “The fame thing had finally hit home — in a big way.”

Watson wasn’t the only one feeling the crushing weight of the wand. Rupert Grint, known to millions as the lovable Ron Weasley, admitted he also harbored secret moments of doubt.

“I also had sort of similar feelings to Emma, contemplating what life would be like if I called it a day,” Grint shared during the special.

He noted that the young cast rarely discussed their struggles with one another at the time, adding, “We never really spoke about it. I guess we were just going through it at our own pace.”

Ultimately, it wasn’t a magic spell that kept Watson in the fold, but the “genuine” support of the Potterheads.

“The fans genuinely wanted me to succeed,” she noted emotionally. “And they all genuinely have each other’s backs. How great is that?”

The reunion marks a massive milestone for the franchise, featuring legendary names like Helena Bonham Carter, Ralph Fiennes, Gary Oldman, and Tom Felton.

Notably absent from the new sit-down interviews is series creator J.K. Rowling, who appears only via archival footage—a move that has already sparked a massive buzz on X and TikTok.

For fans, seeing the “Golden Trio” back together is a dream come true, but the realization that Hermione almost disappeared mid-series has left the internet feeling more than a little emotional.

Luckily for us, Watson chose to stay, proving that even the bravest witches sometimes get a little scared.
