Warning: SPOILERS for Dutton Ranch Season 1's Finale – "El Padrino"
Dutton Ranch season 2 will be much more Ed Harris' show, promise series leads Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser.
Everett McKinney (Ed Harris) is the most loyal new friend that Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) met in Dutton Ranch season 1. A kindly veterinarian who knows the ins and outs of Rio Paloma, Texas, Everett was the rare person who proved trustworthy and helpful to Beth and Rip. However, McKinney mainly played a supporting role despite Ed Harris' star power.

In an interview with TV Insider, Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser guarantee that Ed Harris will "become a very important, integral part" of Dutton Ranch season 2. Hauser agrees that Harris was "used very sparingly" in season 1. Cole promises that "we're going to make sure that [Ed] is a big part" of Dutton Ranch season 2 moving forward. See Hauser's quote below:
Cole Hauser: “He’s going to become a very important, integral part of season 2. And for both Kelly and I, obviously, Annette is phenomenal, but I cannot wait to work more with him. He’s such an amazing American actor that I think was used very sparingly this year. We’re going to make sure that he is a big part of helping us moving forward in whatever capacity.”
Kelly Reilly concurs that Dutton Ranch season 2 "is going to feel very much more Ed's show," noting that Dutton Ranch is an ensemble with five lead characters, and not just "the Beth and Rip show." Reilly is "proud" to be working with Academy Award-caliber actors like Ed Harris and Annette Bening, a pair of acting "heavyweights" who "made us legit." Read Kelly's quote below:
Kelly Reilly: “I think season 2 is going to feel very much more Ed’s show. This is not the Beth and Rip show. This is Dutton Ranch, and there’s four lead characters, five. Annette Bening and Ed Harris, it’s such a privilege to have them come join our show. I’ve said this before, I feel like they made us legit. We could have just been a little soapy spinoff, and we’re not because of them. We’re a drama, we’re a new show, and it’s got some heavyweights in it. We’re very proud to be working with them.”
New Dutton Ranch season 2 showrunner Benjamin Cavell, replacing series creator Chad Feehan, is leading the writer's room with creative input from Reilly and Hauser (who are also executive producers), and executive producer and director Christina Alexandra Varos. In addition, executive producer Taylor Sheridan will have a greater influence on Dutton Ranch season 2.
While Everett McKinney was mainly a supporting character in season 1, Dutton Ranch revealed that the world-weary veterinarian has a military past and harbored a lifelong attraction to Beulah Jackson (Annette Bening), which she reciprocated. Everett and Beulah took a shot at romance, but McKinney put a halt to it after learning Beulah's secrets that she leads the 10-Petals Ranch's drug smuggling operation.
As Kelly Reilly puts it, Dutton Ranch has five series leads: Beth Dutton, Rip Wheeler, Beulah Jackson, Everett McKinney, and Carter (Finn Little). Of those five, McKinney had the least to do in season 1, but there is plenty about Harris' character to explore, including the young son he lost and his own secrets from his US Navy career with the Sea Wolves.

Returning for Dutton Ranch season 2 alongside Beth, Rip, Beulah, Everett, and Carter are Natalie Alyn Lind as Oreana, Juan Pablo Raba as Joaquin Reyes, Marc Menchaca as Zachariah, J.R. Villarreal as Azul, and Raoul Max Trujillo as the villainous Mariano Reyes. However, Jai Courtney's Rob-Will Jackson was killed off in a murder mystery that Dutton Ranch season 2 will solve.
Ed Harris boasts four Academy Award nominations, three Primetime Emmy Award nominations, and won two Golden Globes. Acknowledged as one of the great American actors and filmmakers, Harris ranks high among the prestigious A-list talent Taylor Sheridan has recruited for his many hit TV series.
More Ed Harris and Everett McKinney in Dutton Ranch season 2 can only be a great thing for Paramount+'s worldwide hit Yellowstone spinoff.
