Emma Watson Says She Still Values J.K. Rowling Despite Their Rift; Rowling Responds

The Wizarding World is facing some very real-world drama.

Emma Watson is going viral after getting candid about her relationship with Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling, proving that even the most magical bonds can be complicated.

During a recent appearance on the On Purpose with Jay Shetty podcast, the -year-old actress—forever known to fans as the brilliant Hermione Granger—addressed the “seemingly incompatible” nature of her love for Rowling and her own staunch support for the transgender community.

“I really don’t believe that by having had that experience and holding the love and support and views that I have, means that I can’t and don’t treasure Jo,” Watson told Shetty.

The actress, who has been a vocal advocate for LGBTQIA+ rights for years, explained that she refuses to let political differences erase the personal history they share.

“I will never believe that one negates the other and that my experience of that person, I don’t get to keep and cherish,” Watson added. “I think it’s my deepest wish that I hope people who don’t agree with my opinion will love me, and I hope I can keep loving people who I don’t necessarily share the same opinion with.”

However, the “peace offering” didn’t sit well with everyone—including Rowling herself.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Rowling shared a parody video created by a satirist known as “Intel Lady.” In the clip, an impersonator mocks Watson’s “balanced” stance, suggesting the actress is trying to have it both ways.

Rowling seemed to get a kick out of the jab, captioning the post: “I’m here for ALL the spoofs.”

The parody video took a direct swipe at Watson’s podcast quotes, with the satirist exaggerating Emma’s words to suggest she “stands shoulder-to-shoulder” with those who “wish harm” on the author while simultaneously claiming to love her.

Rowling didn’t stop at the video. In a lengthy follow-up statement, she labeled Watson’s perspective as “ignorant,” suggesting the actress’s views are “cushioned by wealth and fame.”

“I’m not owed eternal agreement from any actor who once played a character I created,” Rowling wrote. “But adults can’t expect to cosy up to an activist movement that regularly calls for a friend’s assassination, then assert their right to the former friend’s love.”

Fans on social media were quickly divided over the exchange. While some praised Watson for her “maturity” and “grace,” others felt Rowling’s public mocking of the star who helped bring her books to life was a “bridge too far.”

This isn’t the first time the two have been at odds. Back in , Watson joined costars Daniel Radcliffe and Eddie Redmayne in publicly opposing Rowling’s rhetoric regarding transgender people.

“Trans people are who they say they are and deserve to live their lives without being constantly questioned,” Watson famously wrote at the time.

The latest social media friction comes as the Harry Potter franchise prepares for a massive “rebirth.” HBO is currently developing a decade-long television series that will re-adapt all seven books with a brand-new cast.

Rowling is serving as an executive producer on the project, a move HBO has doubled down on despite public pushback.

“J.K. Rowling has a right to express her personal views,” the network said in a previous statement regarding her involvement.

While Watson’s time in the robes may be over, the legacy of her relationship with the woman who created her most famous character clearly remains a work in progress.
