The Boy Who Lived might be facing his toughest battle yet—and this time, it’s not with Voldemort.
J.K. Rowling is making it crystal clear that the stars who brought her wizarding world to life are no longer in her good graces. The Harry Potter author has set the internet ablaze once again after taking to X (formerly Twitter) to blast “celebrity mouthpieces” in the wake of the Cass Review, a controversial new medical report concerning gender identity services for children in the U.K.
The report, which claims there is “no good evidence” regarding the long-term outcomes of medical interventions for gender-related distress in minors, has reignited the long-standing and deeply polarizing public feud between Rowling and her former cast members.
The tension reached a boiling point when a social media follower suggested that franchise leads Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson might owe Rowling a “very public apology,” with the fan assuming the author would ultimately “forgive them.”
Rowling’s response was swift, stinging, and left no room for interpretation.
“Not safe, I’m afraid,” the author fired back. “Celebs who cosied up to a movement intent on eroding women’s hard-won rights and who used their platforms to cheer on the transitioning of minors can save their apologies for traumatised detransitioners and vulnerable women reliant on single sex spaces.”
The author didn’t hold back her emotions regarding the report’s findings, telling her followers she “just burst into tears” over what she described as a “tragedy.”
“I understand that the review’s conclusions will have come as a seismic shock to those who’ve hounded and demonised whistleblowers,” Rowling wrote. She added that those who “hopped on the bandwagon” should feel a sense of “medical malpractice” regarding the treatment of youth.
This latest chapter in the Potter saga is just the newest crack in a foundation that began to crumble years ago. Back in , Radcliffe and Watson both publicly distanced themselves from Rowling’s views to show their unwavering support for the transgender community.
Radcliffe notably wrote a moving essay for The Trevor Project at the time, stating firmly, “Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people.”
Watson followed suit, telling her millions of followers, “Trans people are who they say they are and deserve to live their lives without being constantly questioned or told they aren’t who they say they are.”
While some fans on X praised Rowling for “standing her ground” following the release of the new report, others expressed heartbreak over the continued fracturing of the beloved childhood franchise.
“It’s so sad to see the creator and the cast of my childhood so divided,” one fan commented. “This feels like the end of an era.”
With the Cass Review now fueling the fire, it seems the “middle ground” is further away than ever for the residents of Hogwarts. For fans who grew up on the magic of friendship and bravery, the real-world drama is proving to be a difficult pill to swallow.
