Jennifer Lawrence Speaks Out on ‘Mortifying’ Global Conflict: ‘What’s Happening Is No Less Than a Genocide’

Jennifer Lawrence is using her platform to send a powerful—and polarizing—message to the world.

While attending a conference at the San Sebastián Film Festival, the Hunger Games alum got deeply personal when asked about the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict. As the war approaches the two-year mark, Lawrence didn’t mince words, labeling the situation as “no less than a genocide.”

The actress, who has become increasingly vocal about social issues in recent years, admitted that the state of global affairs has left her feeling “mortified” and “terrified.”

“I’m terrified and it’s mortifying,” Lawrence shared during the emotional session. “What’s happening is no less than a genocide and it’s unacceptable. I’m terrified for my children, for all of our children.”

The -year-old mother of one expressed a heartbreaking concern for the future, noting that she fears the “disrespect and discourse” of today’s political climate will become the “new normal” for the next generation.

“I mean, the kids who are voting right now at , it’s going to be totally normal to them that politics has no integrity,” she added. “Politicians lie, there is no empathy.”

Lawrence’s comments immediately ignited a firestorm on X (formerly Twitter) and TikTok. Fans of The Hunger Games were quick to draw parallels between her real-life stance and the themes of her iconic franchise, where her character, Katniss Everdeen, led a rebellion against an oppressive regime.

However, the Silver Linings Playbook star also touched on the complicated tightrope that celebrities must walk when speaking on such heavy topics. She admitted to a “fear in speaking too much,” worried that her words might be used to “add more fire” rather than fix the “disgraceful situation.”

“I just want people to stay focused on who is responsible,” she urged, “and not let the actors and the artists who are trying to express freedom of art… take the heat for the individuals that are actually responsible.”

Lawrence is far from the only star taking a stand. Hollywood is currently navigating a deep divide, with over , creatives—including Mark Ruffalo, Joaquin Phoenix, and Javier Bardem—recently signing a letter calling for a boycott of the Israeli film industry.

On the other side of the aisle, stars like Mayim Bialik, Liev Schreiber, and Sharon Osbourne have signed a counter-letter denouncing those boycott calls, showcasing just how fractured the industry remains.

As awards season approaches, the conversation is only expected to get louder. With powerful documentaries like The Voice of Hind Rajab already generating Oscar buzz, the red carpets of are likely to see even more stars following in Lawrence’s footsteps.

For now, Lawrence is reminding her fans that silence isn’t an option. “Everybody needs to remember that when you ignore what’s happening on one side of the world,” she warned, “it won’t be long until it’s on your side as well.”
